How to Join the Nebuta Parade as a Haneto Dancer

One of the most unique things about the Aomori Nebuta Festival is that visitors are not just spectators — anyone can join the parade as a haneto dancer. There is no registration, no fee to join, and no experience required. The only rule is: you must wear the full haneto costume.
What is a haneto?
Haneto (跳人) literally means "jumping person." Dancers hop rhythmically alongside the floats shouting "Rassera! Rassera!" to the beat of taiko drums and flutes. On peak nights, more than 10,000 haneto join a single parade.
The costume
The traditional outfit includes a yukata, a colorful hanagasa flower hat, tied sashes, tabi socks and straw sandals. Small bells (suzu) are attached and left along the route — a symbol of shedding misfortune.
Where to rent
Costume rental is available from many shops and hotels around JR Aomori Station for approximately ¥4,000–¥5,000, including help getting dressed. Rent early on August 2–3 to guarantee availability during peak dates.
